How does the new Orb Freebird differ from last year’s model?
The fourth generation of the Black Crows Orb Freebird has been completely redesigned while retaining the qualities that have made it one of Black Crows’ most popular touring skis. A new sidecut, progressive flex, lower weight and a new skin attachment system further enhance its character – a precise mountain ski designed primarily for confident and reliable descents.
The 91 mm waist provides an ideal balance between efficient climbing and downhill stability. Improved edge hold on hard snow and a more composed feel at higher speeds make the Orb Freebird an excellent choice for long ski tours and technical high-alpine objectives.
The Orb Freebird is designed for skiers who regularly encounter hard spring snow, wind-affected slopes and narrow couloirs in the high mountains. A narrower tip and tail combined with the new geometry improve edge hold without compromising the ski’s natural manoeuvrability or sufficient float in fresh snow.
- 91 mm underfoot – an ideal balance between efficient climbing, precision on hard snow and sufficient float in fresh snow.
- Slightly straighter sidecut – provides greater edge stability and a more composed feel at higher speeds.
- Progressive flex – a firm midsection delivers precision, while the softer tip and tail improve comfort and make the ski easier to control in variable conditions.
- Tip rocker – makes the ski easier to manoeuvre in spring snow, fresh powder and chopped-up terrain.
- New climbing skin attachment system – simplifies handling and saves time during transitions.
Confidence in variable conditions
A single high-alpine descent can involve several different types of snow. The Orb Freebird was designed specifically for these changing conditions. It provides precise turn initiation and excellent control on firm spring snow, wind-affected surfaces and fresh snow. At the same time, it combines low weight with full-featured downhill performance.
- Carbon and fibreglass reinforcement – increases torsional stiffness and ensures precise turn control.
- Ash reinforcement beneath the binding area – improves binding retention and enhances the ski’s long-term durability.
- Traditional camber underfoot – provides reliable edge contact and grip, even on hard snow.
- 18 m turning radius – offers a balanced combination of stability at higher speeds and manoeuvrability in technical terrain.
Low weight without compromising downhill performance
The lightweight paulownia core helps conserve energy on the ascent, while the redesigned construction provides greater confidence and comfort when skiing. Its well-balanced construction maintains a natural feel and reliable downhill performance.
- Paulownia core – significantly reduces weight without compromising skiing performance.
- Low weight – makes long ascents and multi-day mountain tours more efficient.
- Balanced construction – combines uphill efficiency with confidence and precision on the descent.
The Orb Freebird is not designed for the deepest powder or everyday resort skiing. If you expect precision, excellent edge hold and confidence on the descent without unnecessary weight, the Black Crows Orb Freebird is one of the best choices in the Black Crows collection.
